It’s a common misconception that modern slavery only occurs in certain industries or countries. Enforced labour is happening in the UK, and across all industries. A recent investigation carried out by The Sunday Times found that textile workers producing clothes for Boohoo’s suppliers were underpaid while working in unsafe conditions.

In addition, the number of potential modern slavery victims in UK has increased by 52% since 2019 and the COVID-19 crisis is reducing access to safe and reliable employment due to border closures and travel restrictions. With education systems around the world suspended this heightens the threat of increased child exploitation. In 2019, the most common type of exploitation was labour exploitation and there are currently 40.3 million people estimated to be in modern slavery globally.

In light of these recent events, we invite you to join us on 29th July as we explore the growing risk of modern slavery across different sectors and industries with Shirley Goodrick from Slave-Free Alliance.

Shirley was recruited by Slave-Free Alliance in 2019 from a commercial background in manufacturing, import and sales to join the Technical Services team. With experience of supply chain, encompassing both hard and soft goods and from artisan to high degrees of automation across Europe and Asia Pacific, Shirley has witnessed first-hand the human impact of debt bondage. Shirley has been involved in collaborative partnerships with manufacturers and household brands working to address modern slavery in supply chains.
