Five Emerging Trends in Supplier Risk Energy Leaders Should be Watching

Energy companies may be anchored in individual markets, but the supply chains supporting their operations increasingly extend across regions. Today, they are facing an increasingly complex operating environment. Global supply chains, evolving ESG regulations, geopolitical instability, cyber threats and financial uncertainty have transformed what procurement teams need to know about their suppliers. Critical equipment, specialist contractors and essential services are sourced internationally, creating a need for supplier assurance that combines local market knowledge with a consistent view across the wider supply chain.

For more than 30 years, Achilles has worked with energy organisations and their suppliers to strengthen assurance across complex global supply chains. Today, the Achilles supplier network includes more than 350,000 suppliers across Europe, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa.

Supplier data can reveal more than just a snapshot of the risk landscape today – it can also provide valuable insight into where the industry is heading. The findings highlight five priorities for energy companies seeking a more consistent view of supplier risk across markets, and a better understanding of where attention may be required.

Drawing on data from more than 10,000 energy suppliers across Northern and Southern Europe, North and South America, the APAC region and Middle East and Africa, more than 3,700 of those suppliers have multiple years of performance history, enabling us to look beyond current scores and examine how supplier performance is changing over time.

From this data, we have derived five trends we can see shaping the future of energy supply chain management.

1. Energy supply chains need a view beyond individual markets

Perhaps the clearest message from the data is that energy supply chains are no longer regional.

Achilles currently assesses suppliers operating across Northern and Southern Europe, North and South America, the APAC region and Middle East and Africa.

Norway remains one of the largest supplier populations, but it represents just one part of a much broader international supply network.

The country rankings also highlight significant differences in supplier maturity across different performance categories.

For example:

  • Ecuador recorded the highest overall supplier score.
  • Norway ranked strongly for financial health and governance.
  • The UK led Health & Safety performance.

Different countries demonstrated strengths in different areas. So what does this mean for procurement teams? This data reinforces an important point – managing supplier risk effectively requires one consistent view across every geography, and multiple risk areas, and not multiple disconnected regional processes.

2. Suppliers are improving – but the direction of travel matters

For many years, supplier assurance was largely viewed as a compliance exercise. Complete the assessment, submit the documents, gain approval and move on.

The latest data suggests that mindset is changing.

Overall supplier performance improved by 5% year on year. The proportion classified as low risk rose by 17%, while the high-risk population fell by 20%. The data does not by itself attribute this movement to a single intervention, but the direction of travel is consistent with a more continuous approach to supplier assessment, benchmarking and improvement.

The data does not establish a single cause, but suggests that continuous engagement, benchmarking and ongoing visibility are helping suppliers improve over time.

More mature assurance programmes are no longer measuring compliance they are actively influencing supplier performance and driving improvement.

The executive implication? Assurance investment should be judged not only by the number of suppliers qualified, but by whether supplier risk profiles improve over time.

Supplier assurance is becoming a continuous improvement programme, rather than a one-off qualification exercise.

3. Qualification and continuous monitoring answer different questions

Supplier qualification has been a very important part of supplier assurance and it remains an essential part of the process, providing organisations with the information they need to determine whether a supplier meets the required standards to begin a commercial relationship. However, qualification answers just one single question: “Is this supplier suitable to work with now?”

The challenge is that supplier risk profiles do not stand still. In a rapidly evolving market, things can change. Financial health changes, cyber vulnerabilities emerge, ownership structures shift and  geopolitical events reshape operating environments. The question procurement teams increasingly need to answer is not whether a supplier met the required criteria at the point of onboarding, but whether they continue to meet them months or even years later.

The latest Achilles energy supplier data demonstrates why this distinction matters. More than 3,700 suppliers now have at least two years of performance history, allowing organisations to track trends rather than simply record a single point in time. Over the past year alone, overall supplier performance improved by 5%, environmental performance increased by 8%, governance scores rose by 4%, financial performance improved by 3%, and Health & Safety risk reduced by 12%. At the same time, the proportion of suppliers classified as low risk increased by 17%, while the proportion of high-risk suppliers fell by 20%.

These improvements would simply be invisible if organisations relied solely on qualification at theonboarding stage. Continuous monitoring does not replace supplier qualification, but it uses this as a launchpad – building on it, providing procurement teams with an ongoing understanding of supplier performance, emerging risks and opportunities for improvement.

Together, qualification and continuous monitoring answer two equally important questions: “Should we work with this supplier?” and “How is this supplier performing today?”

4. Environmental performance is also improving, while evidence requirements are becoming more demanding

One of the strongest trends emerging from the data is the continued improvement in environmental performance.

Environmental scores increased by 8% year-on-year – the largest improvement across all major performance categories.

This reflects the growing importance of sustainability within the energy sector as organisations prepare for expanding reporting requirements, investor expectations and customer scrutiny.

However, these improvement trends should not create complacency.

Environmental legislation continues to evolve across multiple jurisdictions, while energy companies increasingly need consistent data across global supplier networks rather than isolated regional programmes.

The executive implication? Environmental assurance challenges are not collecting another set of disclosures. It is establishing whether supplier data is current, comparable and sufficiently robust to support regulatory reporting and investment decisions.

Environmental performance is improving but will not solve the data governance challenge.

5. Comparable data helps organisations target assurance activity more effectively

More than 3,700 suppliers now have at least two years of performance history within the Achilles programme. That allows procurement and risk teams to distinguish persistent weaknesses from temporary exceptions, identify suppliers whose performance is deteriorating, and target deeper assurance or improvement activity accordingly.

Digitalisation and AI can help process documents, maintain supplier records and identify emerging signals at scale. Their strategic value is not simply faster onboarding. It is the ability to direct expert attention towards the suppliers, risk domains and interventions most likely to affect operational resilience.

Instead of asking:

“Is this supplier compliant?”

Procurement teams can begin asking:

  • Where is supplier risk increasing fastest?
  • Which critical suppliers require intervention?
  • Where should assurance resources be concentrated?
  • Is supplier performance improving as a result?

These questions can create stronger, more resilient supply chains. They are only possible when organisations move beyond static supplier records towards continuously refreshed supplier intelligence.

The future belongs to organisations that use supplier data to make better decisions – not simply to complete compliance processes.

What is next for supply chain management in the energy sector?

From supplier qualification to a clearer view of risk

The findings are encouraging. Supplier performance is improving across several important measures, and a growing body of performance history is giving energy companies a better understanding of how supplier risk develops over time.

The operating environment is also becoming more complex. Suppliers support projects and operations across multiple markets, while financial, regulatory, cyber and geopolitical conditions can change between formal assessments.

Qualification therefore remains essential, but it is only one part of the picture. Energy companies also need consistent information across their global supplier base, together with ongoing monitoring that helps them recognise when a material change may require attention.

The priority is not to collect more supplier data for its own sake. It is to answer three practical questions:

  • Do suppliers meet the required standard?
  • Where is performance or risk changing?
  • Which changes require closer review or action?

The organisations best placed to manage future disruption will be those that can answer those questions consistently across their full supplier base, wherever their suppliers operate.
