It’s estimated that over 40 million people worldwide are currently enduring modern slavery with almost 25 million in forced labour. These figures demonstrate that modern slavery continues to impact many people globally and highlights the need for businesses to address direct ethical employment challenges, and the treatment of people working within their supply chain.

It is of primary importance that companies are well equipped to be able to identify and address any instances of modern slavery in order to build ethical supply chains. But do they always know what they’re looking for?

In this webinar, we have the pleasure to be joined by leaders in the construction industry, Sir Robert McAlpine, Lendlease, and our anti-modern slavery partner Unseen UK to find out how they identify key issues around ethical employment challenges, the approach they take in order to tackle these issues and share best practice.

Speakers

Alice Hands, Head of Ethical and Sustainable Procurement, SRM. Alice has worked for Sir Robert McAlpine for over eight years. She started in the London Sustainability Team, as a project Sustainability Manager before moving into the central Procurement Team in 2016. A large part of Alice’s role currently centres on the development and delivery of Sir Robert McAlpine’s response to the Modern Slavery Act 2015 which has included becoming the first main contractor to be verified under the BRE’s Ethical Labour Sourcing Standard.

Andy Fulterer, Head of Supply Chain, Europe, Lendlease. Andy has over 24 years’ experience working in procurement and has been with Lendlease for the past 12 years.

Justine Currell, Executive Director, Unseen UK. Justine joined Unseen on 1 May 2016 following a 28.5 year career in the civil service. During that time she held a variety of operational and policy posts working across a number of UK Government departments. For the last five years of her civil service career, Justine was the modern slavery senior policy adviser in the Home Office and led on development of the Modern Slavery Act, including the transparency in supply chains provision and business guidance, working closely with Ministers, businesses and international colleagues. Since joining Unseen Justine has been called upon to provide her insight and experience on the issue of modern slavery to media, law enforcement agencies, safeguarding professionals and business. She has specifically provided support to a wide range of key businesses on developing their response to supply chain transparency and is highly regarded in this field. Since joining Unseen Justine has successfully developed and launched the new and enhanced Modern Slavery Helpline and Resource Centre which has become a vital tool for all in the UK’s fight against modern slavery. Justine uses her experience and knowledge of working with UK Ministers to influence other Governments internationally to take action to address modern slavery and, in particular, business supply chain issues.
