UK Publishes Draft IFRS Sustainability Reporting Standards: What It Means for Your Business

Last week, the UK government formally issued draft Sustainability Reporting Standards (UK SRS S1 and S2), marking a significant milestone in the country’s move toward standardised, mandatory ESG disclosures for UK-registered companies.

Based on the global IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards developed by the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), the draft release reflects the UK’s direction of travel bringing corporate sustainability reporting in line with internationally recognised expectations and improving the consistency and comparability of disclosures for investors and stakeholders.

Why it matters

With the consultation open until 17 September 2025, the draft standards are expected to be finalised later this year and gradually integrated into UK regulatory frameworks, including the FCA’s Listing Rules and potentially the Companies Act.

In practical terms, this means that many UK companies, particularly large and listed entities, will soon be required to report sustainability and climate-related information with the same level of rigour as financial disclosures.

According to the UK’s Department for Business and Trade, the goal is to provide investors with consistent, high-quality data, while ensuring UK businesses remain competitive in a global ESG-driven economy. These developments follow the ISSB’s official release of IFRS S1 and S2 in June 2023.
