Achilles experiences: Minera Antamina S.A.

A few years ago, Compañía Minera Antamina S.A. implemented Achilles Controlar, a service that supports the management of subcontracted personnel and equipment risks. Alongside its significant operational contribution to the procurement department, the tool has also had a positive impact on the continuous development of contractors.

Background

Minera Antamina S.A. joined Regic, the Achilles supplier and buyer community for the mining sector, in 2015, becoming one of the first mining client in Peru. After a year of service, the implementation of Controlar began, a tool that contributes to managing the compliance of subcontracted personnel and equipment. Today, the mining company is one of the largest producers of copper and zinc in Peru and one of the ten largest mines in the world in terms of production. The demands of its operations have led Minera Antamina’s Procurement Management team to implement increasingly integrated processes to reduce risks and time invested in these tasks.

Consistent Purchasing Management and Evaluation

Having a tool like Controlar arose from the need to clearly identify the segment of suppliers and contractors who were not meeting their contract obligations. Before using the service, the procurement department did not have an integrated platform, making it unable to segment this group and align them with the company’s standards.

Since its implementation, Controlar has addressed this need, allowing for professional monitoring of contractor performance and providing key reporting for decision-making. The tool has been a great support in Antamina’s supply chain management and an undeniable contribution to the continuous improvement of supplier performance.

“Among the contractors, we have positioned the service as a tool that helps their companies improve. Along with being a requirement of Antamina, thanks to the compliance reports we provide, they can take actions to enhance their performance,” comments Manuel Silva, Superintendent of the Contracts Area at Antamina. “It’s a benefit for them and for us,” he concludes.

Future Challenges

Since 2015, Antamina has also used the Regic supplier registration service, Achilles supplier and buyer community for the mining sector. Antamina’s supplier register now has an extensive database of high-risk suppliers and has become a key platform for regularizing and standardizing prequalification processes in procurement management.

The goal is to complement this initial prequalification assessment with the behavioural outcomes of companies already working for them through Controlar.

For Achilles, collaborative efforts will be crucial, adapting to the needs and new challenges to deliver valuable solutions and be a real contribution to this company is a definitive commitment.

“The joint work we have done with Achilles is excellent; the responses are quick, there is a lot of closeness and understanding of the industry by the team. All of that is added value.”
