Digitising UK construction: validating CSCS cards electronically

28 Feb 2017
Article by Achilles

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) was formed in 1995 to improve standards and safety on UK construction sites by ensuring construction workers are appropriately trained and qualified. This is managed through the distribution of CSCS cards.

All CSCS cards are smart, they contain an electronic chip which stores information on the cardholder’s identity, qualifications, setting a precedent in what has been an intensely paper-based industry. However, the technology has only been able to fully deliver at sites with electronic card checking procedures which are as rigorous as the scheme itself. This means that many employers are missing out on the full potential of CSCS cards.

The statistics highlighted in this white paper by CSCS IT Partner Donseed (a Biometric
Identity Workplace Management Software specialist) has also identified that there remain opportunities for construction sites to further use smart technology integrated with CSCS.
