Modern slavery and exploitation can take many forms, from human trafficking to forced or bonded labour. According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), 25 million people across the world are in forced labour. This means around 5 in every 1,000 people are being forced to perform tasks against their will. Due to COVID-19, there has been a notable impact on this already marginalised group, unless businesses are able to identify the hidden risks of modern slavery and exploitation in supply chains.
Buyers and suppliers need to ensure they’re doing more than just the minimum expected of them to eradicate modern slavery completely. Did you know, for example, that more than 3,700 UK companies do not have a modern slavery statement, even though they are obliged to by law?
About the speakers
Courtenay Forbes has been with Unseen for three years. Prior to that she had a background in international law and human rights, working with many charities. Courtenay was a Supervisor at the Modern Slavery Helpline for over 18 months, and has a deep understanding of the landscape of modern slavery and the mechanisms of the Helpline. For the past 18 months she has been a Business Account Manager, delivering Unseen’s business services, including bespoke training, consultancy, development of modern slavery statements and risk assessments. She oversees Unseen’s Business Portal, a unique subscription services where businesses get insight into live reports of modern slavery and labour abuse within their supply chains through reports made to the Helpline. She works with brands such as John Lewis, Marks and Spencer, Tesco, Hotel Chocolat, Cordant Group and more. She is a subject matter expert in modern slavery and human trafficking and sits on the government’s Multi Agency Assurance Panel, reviewing cases of potential modern slavery identified in the UK.
Adam Whitfield has over 10 years of management system and site audit experience having visited companies across the world on behalf of our customers in a variety of sectors. Over the past three years Adam has supported the development and implementation of our Responsible Sourcing and Labour Practice Audit programmes. As well as auditing experience Adam is responsible for the implementation of global management system processes against international standards for Achilles.
